ÉIRE - IRELAND Part I - Dublin & Howth

ÉIRE - IRELAND

For the last two weeks i have been travelling around Ireland, you can see my stops in the picture above! Of course i have done alot of urban sketching these days - a lot to scan! Therefore i will split the sketches in five parts: Dublin & Howth, Kilcar & Donegal, Galway, Cork. For the fifth part I still have to wait, it will consist 9 postcards I drew and sent to my freinds and family - they have to scan it or take a picture of it, so that i can share it with you!

DAY 1: Dublin
The Marsh's Library is a wonderful place - it's basically a library taken from the 17th century and placed into the 21st. The entrance i sketched is therefore a timetravel machine. Oh the smell in there...just wonderfull!
Colorfull houses behind Dublins Castle - i drew it from the backalley, just a bit off the tourists tracks. It was there when i discovered i forget one of my green pen, i had to mix it here, but it proofed to be ess fatal than i expected!

Sitting in Keogh's Cafe, looking across the street. I actually wanted to color it, but my muffin was eaten and the coffee cup was emtpy - so i moved on, not without taking a reference picture, which i probably won't use anymore now...
DAY 2: Dublin
Trinity College - Yes i paid too much to see the bok of Kells, but i haven't really done any other touristic thing. And the library was amazing! Any, the long room is just at my right side, off the sketch. I don't know how the other buildings are called.
A wonderful bookshop! Lots of books, old and new, little magazines, dusty shelves, good coffee, a nice place to sit. Just great!

Some random old building besides the river Liffey in Dublin. It was pretty windy, but i like the contrast of the bricks overpainted with graffitis and the newly built strange building-structure behind it!
DAY 3: Howth & Dublin
The Lighthouse in Howth, about twenty minutes with the train from Dublin. This was the first thing i did when i arrived: i walked down the pier till the end, sat down, sucked in the salty air and drew this view. Loved it!
Then i turned my head about 30° to the left and saw that peculiar looking island, which i then drew. I had to cut it in two pieces to fit the whole beauty on to the paper.
Looking southeast on a late morning isn't the best idea, even if it has some thin layer of clouds, the sun will still blind you...
looking down on to aa nice rock that stood out of the sea just beneath me. You can see the same rock on the far right side of the sketch above. I tried out pastels, which i didn't use anymore for the last then years, at least!
I had a little sandwich here, just before heading back to Howth. It would have taken some hours to walk around the peninsula - and i rather wanted to see some more of the little town.
Or eat something in the local Cafe. It was a charming little cafe on the second floor, with a store at ground level with mostly organic and local food. The seagulls are from the next day in St. Stephen's green in Dublin, before i took the Bus to Donegal.
 DAY 4: Dublin -> Kilcar
Same here. Sitting in the St. Stephen's Green and waiting, till the bus leaves. On the bank next to me, a young Dubliner fed the pigeons, and they were actually sitting on his hands and arms! I should have drawn this, instead of that lame bridge, but was a bit tired.

Really quick Sketches. Views from the Bus.

Stay tuned - Part II will come soon, the wild north west of Ireland!

two quarters

Near the römerhof in zürich, there are two different quarters. One is above the main street with the tramway, the other is just under it. Although they're so close, they are quite diferent: One has a lot of small one family houses - the other has big old english houses. Some things they have in common: it's expensive to live there, and the quarters are really green - a lot of nice gardens, big trees just beside the houses, and more colors than in center of the city.
It's also nice to draw there: it's quiet, has a lot of beautiful scenes and a good cafe right in the middle.
I drew the black lines on the 23th, and did the colors yesterday and the day before.

Streulistrasse 17, Samariterstrasse 30, A5, fineliner & watercolors, each about 1.5 hours

and with colors: i love the contrast in the colors, and am quite happy with the shadows, but not so with perspective...

tried to keep the focus on the shadows - it still isn't that good, but its coming along!

colors of zurich

Colored the sketch from yesterday - sitting in front of an art gallery. It is a wonderful house surrounded by ugly ones, and so colorful! The colors of zurich are grey, brown, in general muddy colors - it's only in the old quarters where there are small one family houses where the colors change to bright ones! this house is just at the edge of such a quarter, so it pops out of the greyish houses surrounding it.

fineliner, watercolors, asylstrasse 61 - 67, zürich, 21./22.08.14

I like it! But i really should work on shadows...

different

today is different: for once, i didn't drew an old building, but a new appartment building, being precise the inner courtyard of it, with an interesting design. Also new: filling in some colors at home - in Photoshop!

edit - playing around in photoshop. It's amazing, what colors can do!

21.8.14 - Sonnhaldenstrasse ZH - Brushpen & Photoshop - 29x21 cm

this is the original sketch

not perfect...of course. But the sketch is also not that suitable, since it has a lot of open forms, an no real spliiting into different layers.

okay, okay, i stop!

Winterthur

Yesterday i went to the Winterthurer Musikfestwochen, a festival with a lot of concerts for free in the heart of winterthur. I was early there, because i met with a friend, who works there. After the coffee, i still had time, so I walked a bit around, following the directions of my friend, and ended up at the Lagerplatz, where old and huge storage buildings were reused as bars, shops, for bicyclemessenger, piano sellers, gyms, university rooms... While I didn't had that much time left, i really quickly sketch one of the outdoor-halls. I didn't care too much about correct proportions, i just wanted to grasp the vastness.

Lagerplatz, Winterthur, 18.8.2014, black fineliner

This is new to me - a quick sketch, where i don't care if the proportions aren't too correct. But it felt great doing this!

fountains

over the past week, i drew some of the many many fountains in zurich. It was really fun to work in this little format, one have to draw only the essential. Also, it was a good perspective exercise.
Locations are in clockwork order, starting top left.
okay: Hottingerplatz, Kreuzplatz, Zollikerstrasse/Burgweg (I drew that already in an other drawing), near the station Museum Rietberg

in front of the church Unterstrasse, Mühlebachstrasse/Feldeggstrasse, Titlistrasse/Hauserstrasse, Zürichbergstrasse/Bergstrasse, Grütlistrasse/Seestrasse

Diesbach

I stayed at Diesbach, GL with a friend for two days, shooting a small movie project of him for school. while he was setting up the lights and all, i went for a short sketch walk. later, before dinner, and the next morning, i used the free time to draw the view from the house.

Black markers, Schmincke Watercolors, Pencil, Brushpen,
18/19.7.2014

view from Diesbach over to Betschwanden. It was midday, and the sun was so hot and burning, i had to take some breaks in the shadow. I tried out a  bigger brush for the landscape, but i'm not quiet happy with the result...29.7x21cm (A4)
small and quick sketch of the waterfall nearby. I did another with watercolors only, but not happy with that. I could have spent hours in the cooling shadow of the mountain trying to capture the amazing view and athmosphere, lights, shadows and colors. Have to go back! 14.8x21cm^ (A5)

in the evening, the view from the house just acros the meadow. this was the old administration building of the factory just across the railway (see below). now its only used by the local band. in the background i think you can see the rest of Diesbach, but i'm not sure, it could be that it's already the next village. 21x14.8 cm (A5)

this is the old factory behind the railway. it was still used until somewhen around 2000, and it produced textiles, like almost every other factory in Glarus. the textiles are really famous, but they aren't produced anymore - it costs too much. the electricity they would get from the canal, which goes through the whole valley providing energy and thus providing an income for the valley, mainly in the 19th century. 21x14.8 (A5)
